Clients often ask what information they should have when they first talk to attorneys. Each client has their own individual issues. Even though you may have talked to friends or family and heard about someone else, your life is unique. When you first talk to an attorney, we like to be able to talk to you about three main issues if you are calling about a divorce. First of course, if you have children, we will want to know about your kids. Next will be the financial issues, whether it involves child support, spousal maintenance (alimony), and sometimes debts fall into this area. The last is property. This includes personal property, real estate, and investment, retirement plans and any other assets, along with your debts. Gathering up information prior to your first conversation with an attorney can help the attorney individualize these issues, rather than just giving you an overview of general information.
